How To Draw Head In Perspective

example of different head angles

The Basic Forms

To draw the head from whatsoever bending you must first empathize its bones structure. Look by all the distracting details and visualize the underlying forms. This power to simplify can be applied to the features of the face, merely when starting the drawing you could look even further. Ignore even the features and simplify to the most bones form of the head. I apply a method taught by Andrew Loomis in his volume, "Drawing the Caput & Hands".

The caput deconstructed into its bones forms, is a sphere as the attic and a block as the jaw and cheek basic.

basic forms

A Sphere equally the Cranium

The sides of the head are flat, so nosotros tin can slice off a slice from both sides of the brawl. From profile, this plane will be a perfect circle, only when cartoon it from any other angle, it volition appear to be an oval because of perspective. Divide this oval into quadrants. The vertical line represents the kickoff of the jaw. The horizontal line represents the brow line. The top and bottom of the oval assistance you notice the hair line and the lesser of the olfactory organ.

A Block as the Jaw and Cheek Bones

Attach the shape of the jaw. The top will start at the brow line and the back will beginning at the heart of the oval. This is a 3-D book with a front plane, side planes, and bottom plane (bottom aeroplane is seen from some angles).

Constructing From Any Angle

Step ane – Decide the angle of the ball

The angle of the head is established at the very beginning of the cartoon with the brawl. All three axes must be addressed:

X Centrality - The up and downward tilt is established past the angles of the horizontal and vertical lines in the oval. As well, on extreme up tilts and down tilts, the thirds volition exist foreshortened because of perspective.

rotate x

Y Axis - The direction the head is turning (left or right) is established by the width of the oval. As the head turns towards y'all, you can see more than of the forepart of the face and less of the side, then the oval representing the side will become narrower. Similarly, when the caput turns away from y'all, more of the side plane is revealed and the oval will announced wider.

rotate y

Z Axis - The twist is established past the angle of the center line, the angle of the oval and the placement of the oval on the brawl.

rotate z

Step ii – Notice the thirds

Later on establishing the angle of the brawl, divide the face into thirds. The distance betwixt the hairline and forehead-line should be the same equally the distance betwixt the brow-line and bottom of the nose. Add that same distance to find the chin. Notice how the  hairline and olfactory organ-line align with the top and bottom bottom of the oval when wrapped effectually the face up. Imagine the head as a box. The thirds must be wrapped effectually the side plane and front aeroplane.

find the thirds

Step iii – Add together the jaw

A common mistake at this point is to make the jaw too long in comparing to the brawl. Make sure to measure your thirds correctly and that they relate correctly to the ball. Find how the shape of the jaw changes from various angles.

add the jaw

Step 4 – Add the features

With this bones structure properly established, it becomes much easier to add together the features in the right place. Check back for more information nigh specific features in a later on post.

Practise inventing the head from all possible angles. Go a sketchbook and fill up an entire page with little heads. When drawing without reference photos, yous chop-chop realize where your weaknesses are because you lot tin can't rely on copying. You tin can only piece of work with what y'all know.
